The elliptical galaxy colour-magnitude relation as a discriminant between the monolithic and merger paradigms

The colour-magnitude relation (CMR) of cluster elliptical galaxies has been widely used to constrain their star formation histories (SFHs) and to discriminate between the monolithic collapse and merger paradigms of elliptical galaxy formation. We use a ΛCDM hierarchical merger model of galaxy formation to investigate the existence and redshift evolution of the elliptical galaxy CMR in the merge...

Small Magellanic Cloud Be stars: colour-magnitude relations and mass-loss

We present an analysis of optical lightcurves of Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) Be-type stars. Observations show that (1) optical excess flux is correlated with near-IR excess flux indicating a similar mechanism and (2) the lightcurves can trace out “loops” in a colour-magnitude diagram. A simple model for the time dependence of bound-free and free-free (bf-ff) emission produced by an outflowing ...

The scatter in the near-infrared colour-magnitude relation in spiral galaxies

We have determined a dust-free colour-magnitude (CM) relation for spiral galaxies, by using I−K colours in edge-on galaxies above the plane. We find that the scatter in this relation is small and approximately as large as can be explained by observational uncertainties. The slope of the near-IR CM relation is steeper for spirals than for elliptical galaxies. We suggest two possible explanations...

The Red Giant Branch in Near - Infrared Colour - Magnitude Diagrams . I : The calibration of photometric indices ⋆

We present new high-quality near-infrared photometry of 10 Galactic Globular Clusters spanning a wide metallicity range (−2.126[Fe/H]6 − 0.49): five clusters belong to the Halo (namely, NGC 288, NGC 362, NGC 6752, M 15 and M 30) and five (namely, NGC 6342, NGC 6380, NGC 6440, NGC 6441 and NGC 6624) to the Bulge. By combining J, H and K observations with optical data, we constructed Colour-Magni...

GAIA Galaxy Survey: a multi-colour galaxy survey with GAIA

The performance expected from a galaxy survey to be carried out with GAIA, the GAIA Galaxy Survey, is outlined. From a statistical model of galaxy number density, size and surface brightness distribution, and from detailed numerical simulations based on real images, it is conservatively estimated that GAIA would be able to detect and observe about 3 million galaxies brighter than V ≃ 17 and to ...
